Trip Report

Simex Challenge

21st - 22nd April 2001

The VATC was responsible for running a checkpoint and special stage in this years event held on the 21st of April. The special stage had a 15min DNF, was approx 1km long with a steep in/out creek crossing near the start, a fast section thru the tracks, thru a gully and on to the finish. The creek crossing proved to be difficult for most with only one team not winching but most seemed to cross without too many misshaps. The gully was a rutted section and some competitors de-mounted tyres from their rims while others winched out but most had no problems and the track to the finish was fast and exciting.

The starting duties were taken care of by Steve, Stewart and myself with Mark, Geoff, Simon and company looking after the creek. Darren was the man in the gully while Justin, Daryl, Karen and Hazza stopped the clocks at the finish. After the special stage the competitors were sent on their way to the end of section 1 were Joe and Paul manned the checkpoint receiving the answers from section 1 and handing out section 2 notes, but not before feeding one navigator two weet-bix. The idea was to eat these in the shortest time without using any liquid and Sean was the quickest.

After all the excitement and we were packed up we made our way over to Yellingbo and set up the BBQ trailor ready for breakfast where we cooked eggs, bacon and sausages for the wet, worn-out and starving competitors. Iąd like to thank everyone that helped out before, during and after the event to make it another successful one for the Vic All Terrain 4WD Club and wish Simon, Shane, Brad, Scott, Grant, Sean and Mark all the best when the results are tallied.
