Jason's Queen's Birthday Trip 2007

The weekend started early for us with me finishing at lunch time and then picking Lachlan up from school early so that we could get up to the Walhalla area before dark. A quick check at Merringtons found a few camps already set up so we decided to push on to The Junction where we set up camp, got a fire going and sorted out dinner before kicking back around the fire till the rain started. We grabbed the jackets and umbrella as we weren’t going to let it beat us but it got heavier so we all retired to the beds.

Well the rain never really stopped all night but thanks to our good camping gear (and Thommo for the loan of the queen sized swag) we came out OK. The tracks on the other hand copped a right soaking and the driving became challenging. Our route was to take us along Junction Tk , (but a navigation error on my behalf took us out via O’Tooles), then Toombon Tk and up along Mt Selma Tk to have lunch at Mt Selma in the snow. To our dismay all we had was rain so we set up the tarp and cook the snags before heading off towards Middle Ridge with the sun shining where we found a very secluded campsite on Skeene Ck.

A quick cut with the saw had us enough fire wood for a good sized fire. Dinner was cooked, the kids went to bed and before to long Kate & I hit the beds too.
From our camp we headed up along S21 to the main Jamieson Rd and up to Mt Skeene in hope to find snow but unfortunately there was very little about. There was enough to build a snow man and have a snow fight and before too long the kids were cold and had had enough.

We planned to travel to Mt Sunday via The Barkley River Jeep track which is where be caught up with The OnTrack 4WD club. We had lunch while we watched them tackle the climb. As time was getting away from us it was decided not to tackle Mt Sunday so we turned around and headed over to Mitchells Flat to find a lovely grassy area by the river where we set up camp again, lit the fire, had some dinner before playing glow stick Olympics with the kids and going to bed.

With Monday came the rain again and before too long we were packed up and ready to go heading out to the north via Mitchells Tk, thru the fast flowing Jamieson River at Grannys Flat and into Jamieson to pick up some lunch before stopping for lunch at a campsite south of Jamieson. A quick blast thru the Golburn River had the under side of the car cleaned up saving me hours of hard, cold messy work at the carwash.

Soon after we were on our way along the main road thru Woods Point finally arriving at home about 5pm.
It was a great weekend with some challenging driving on some rather recently graded “fire break” tracks, some great sights with lots of re-growth after the fires and was good to see some hidden treasures along the way

Even with all the wet weather and lack of snow it was good to get away back to the High Country.
