2009 Bushfire - Black Saturday - Volunteer Work

Sunday 22nd Feb

We managed to get 13 people to head up to Geoff's home on the outskirts of Kinglake
we all arrived around 8.45am after buying breaky at the bakery in Yarra Glen

The attendees from the club where
Roger Lamb
Macca
John Emerson
Joel
Andrian Simons
Me
Andrew Norman

We then split up into three groups all to do different things

Rog's group went to one of the most devistated parts of Kinglake to help a young newly married couple clear their block as they had lost everything.
They worked all day getting rid of all the dangerous trees took six full trailer loads of timber out to the tip and they believe they could of done another 6 if there was the time

Emo's group went out to the back of Geoff's property and cut up all the fallen trees and stack the timber into bombfire piles for later in the year clean up fire

and our group did the same at the front of the block

Then after a couple of hours Emo's and my group joined forces to drop the trees that were in danger of falling over on to the main Road and we spent the rest of the day stopping traffic dropping trees of a high bank on to the road and then cutting them up as quickly as possible to let the traffic through.

We help clean up his drive way as well and generally made the enviroment a little safer and cleaner

We must of done a good job because he rang me tonight to see when we can get back up there

February 13th - Taking Hay to local farms

Fenurary 15th - Working Bee in Labatouche

We met at Tooradin with all our goods ready to deliver. From here we headed to Bayles CFA and were briefed as to what was required, split into groups and headed off to do our bit.
Some of us went to Jess' place where all the boundary fences were cleared ready for the new fence, new posts were dropped every 5 metres, fences we could strain were re-strained, general clean up done, power pole for temp power installed as were temp poles to get ext leads off ground, 2 caravans set up so she and her brother had a temp house and dropped off hay, baths and buckets.

Another group headed to Johns house and did general clean up as well as spinning the new water tank, excavating and getting ready for a new concrete area for between the temp site sheds, cutting down trees (go Scotty!!) and some baths, hay and tubs were also dropped off.

Nathan and another group headed out and did a similar thing at another place and can report below.

Brad, Nic, Steve, Gill, Wendy & Co delivered hay to where it needed to go and James and Joel delivered bigger stuff where it was needed.
Oh and between that some even put out fires that started in an unburnt paddock due to the wind.
Busy day but I'm sure, as I do, most feel good about the work they did!!
